You CAN Regain Lasting Wellness

Can therapeutic bodywork treat conditions such as chronic whiplash from car accidents, scoliosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, carpal tunnel, nerve entrapment, and much more? Absolutely.

First of all, most people don't realize where you feel pain is not necessarily where the source of your problems are. Shoulder and mid-back pain can mean the muscles in the chest, front neck area, and ribcage are short and need to be softened and lengthened. Lower back pain can point to shortened abdominal muscles (e.g. psoas) but is usually associated with an imbalance in the rotation of the iliums and tipping of the sacrum causing compensations and uneven tension on the musculature of the pelvis and back. An effective protocol will start with addressing the source of the problems first, otherwise the pain will return within a short time.

In addition, my focus is on Structural Energetic Therapy ®, which was developed by Don McCann for over 25 years and integrates both Cranial/Structural techniques (based on Dallas Hancock's research), and Don's specific soft tissue protocols - (Structural Energetic Therapy). The basic premise behind SET is that we're all born with a core postural distortion and don't even realize it. Our left hip is rotated forward and down, and our right hip is rotated backward. What this means is that specific muscles on the left side like the left adductors, left quadricep and left knee tend to have tight muscles, and different specific muscles on the right side like the right hamstring, right piriformis and right psoas tend to be tight - in other words - a spiral pattern occurs. People who injure themselves are more likely to injure the left quad or left knee, or right hamstring and other specific areas of weakness caused by the distortion. If they have lower back pain or sciatica, the tendency is that it is more likely on the right side than the left unless the body has collapsed further into distortion due to accident or injury or emotional trauma.

Because the left hip is rotated forward and slightly down, most of us are walking around with a left leg slightly longer than the right, which causes compensations in the whole body from the feet up to the head, and can result in knee/ankle problems, mid back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and headaches. The tilted sacrum from the rotational imbalance in the iliums (hips) also is a basic cause of scoliosis which we all have, the question is, to what degree. For those who suffer from fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue (two sides of the same coin), many of the tender/trigger points that are tested to diagnose fibromyalgia relate directly to the core distortion pattern. The symptoms of that distortion, if left untreated, becomes evident at two opposite ends of the spectrum - whether we lead sedentary lives, or engage in weight-bearing activities.

To complicate matters, life and traumatic events occur on top of this core postural distortion. Any falls, accidents, or trauma of any kind tends to move the body further into this distortion causing a structural collapse of the core distortion and increased painful symptoms throughout the body.

Therefore, the initial treatment protocol involves either doing the pelvic balancing working each side of the body differently to reduce the core distortion twist, or treating the head, neck and shoulder area to release the effects of the core distortion in the upper body.

Don wasn’t able to get patients to stable weightbearing state until he met someone named Dallas Hancock D.C., who had discovered soft tissue restrictions in the cranium that held the cranial bones in distortion which is directly related to the distortion in the pelvis. Don worked with Dallas to develop the Cranial/Structural techniques and when he incorporated these techniques into his protocols, he was able to get patients to stabilize out of the core distortion structurally, and this distortion did not return. Because of my training with Don in these advanced Cranial/Structural techniques, I've had patients who could not physically walk into my office unassisted able to walk out of my office unassisted. I am able to get people to a point where they are pain free and only need to come in for treatment on an as needed basis. My goal is to help treat people who are ready to be treated, who have lives to live and no time to be sick or live in chronic pain.

While not many people have heard of Structural Energetic Therapy that incorporates the Cranial/Structural techniques, Don McCann is teaching intermediate and advanced workshops to train therapists in this modality. McGraw-Hill is also going to be publishing a two volume set of the intermediate level of this work with the hope that this work will be incorporated into massage school curriculums - Don McCann and Pam Putnam are currently expanding their already published material for these publications. The Cranial/Structural techniques are not going to be published in the McGraw-Hill books, nor is the advanced SET work - these techniques are presented in workshops only.
